Cannondale Bicycle Recall – 2009 Six 5, Six 6, Six Carbon 5 and Six Carbon 6 Bicycles

 

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the Cannondale announced a voluntary recall of several defective Cannondale bicycles.  The Cannondale bicycles included in this recall are the 2009 Six 5, Six 6, Six Carbon 5 and Six Carbon 6 Bicycles.  This recall affects about 1,300 bicycles. 

The hazard arises from the fact that the Cannondale bicycles fail to meet the federal safety standard for bicycles. Spoke protector discs, required on bicycles to prevent the bicycle chain from interfering or suddenly stopping the wheel, are missing from these bicycles. Photographs are included below:

The Consumer Product Safety Commission released a timely warning concerning deadly fires and carbon monoxide hazards with winter home heating.  According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), there have been more than 150 residential fires that resulted in more than 200 deaths since Thanksgiving, 2008. These statistics have led the USFA and fire chiefs to declare the holiday season and start of the new year as one of the deadliest in recent memory.

 

As all of us look for ways to save money in these tough economic times, the concern over additional fire deaths and carbon monoxide poisonings from alternative heating sources is heightened.

 

Home heating equipment is among the top causes of fires and CO Poisonings. From 2003 through 2005, there was an annual average of 57,300 fires and 270 fire deaths associated with portable heaters, central heating systems, and fireplaces and chimneys. There were also 68 deaths, on average, from carbon monoxide poisoning each year associated with these products.

 

Many of us are opting to use space heaters to help heat our homes. Take precautions when using space heaters, fireplaces or other heating sources to help stay warm this winter. Specifically, keep space heaters away from bedding, drapes, shaggy rugs or other things that could catch on fire.  Never use gasoline in a kerosene space heater. Even small amounts of gasoline mixed with kerosene can increase the risk of a fire.

 

The product liability and safety attorneys at Champion Law also recommend using a space heater that has been tested to the latest safety standards and certified by a nationally-recognized testing laboratory. These heaters will have the most up-to-date safety features; older space heaters may not meet the newer safety standards. An unvented gas space heater that meets current safety standards will shut off if oxygen levels fall too low.

 

Do not use portable propane space heaters indoors or in any confined space unless they are specifically designed for indoor use. Always follow the manufacturer’s directions for proper use.

Recardo/Signo Child Seat Recall discused by MN & WI Product Safety Lawyers

 

On February 27, Ricardo North America announced a recall of 5, 444 Signo child restraint assemblies manufactured from February to September 2008.  The recall addresses a dangerous condition where the middle front adjuster strap on some seats may not be working, which prevents the harness from properly tightening around the child.

We’ve all heard a lot about the medical profession’s “crisis” related to lawsuits.  Insurance companies have been behind the vast majority of these messages in their quest for “tort reform” – often in the form of placing “caps” on damages a person injured by medical negligence can receive.  But new data from the American Medical Association rejects the myth that tort reform attracts more doctors, adding to a growing body of research that proves physicians are not fleeing the profession because of medical liability.

The AMA statistics show the number of doctors continues to rise nationwide and in every state. There are now twice as many doctors per capita than when the AMA began tracking physician numbers in the 1960s.

The number of doctors has risen over the last five years in all states. Only Alaska, Georgia, Montana and Utah – all with medical malpractice caps – did not outpace population growth.  If medical malpractice cases and higher insurance premiums were truly causing doctors to quit practicing medicine or move to states with damages caps, would this really be the trend?  Of course not. 

The analysis also found the number of physicians per capita (100,000 population) was 13 percent higher in states without caps. This finding echoes research from the Commonwealth Fund and the American College of Emergency Physicians, which found health care quality and patient safety are far worse in states that have eliminated accountability through tort reform measures.

Additionally, specialties saw significant increases in the number of doctors. Neurosurgeons, OB/GYNS and emergency room doctors all increased over the last five years nationally, again debunking the noise from the insurance industry saying medical malpractice cases are driving doctors from these specialties and hurting Americans’ ability to receive specialized treatment.

Bicycle Recall, R-SYS Front Wheel Rims – MN and WI Safety Lawyers

MINNESOTA AND WISCONSIN BICYCLE ACCIDENT AND SAFETY LAWYERS

 

On February 4, The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Mavic USA, announced a voluntary recall of bicycles with R-SYS Front Wheel Rims.  The CPSC and Maverick believe there are about 12,000 bicycles affected by this recall. 

This bicycle recall relates to front wheel rims manufactured by Salomon SAS, of France. The spokes on the bicycle’s front wheel rim can break during use, posing a fall and crash hazard to riders.  This recall includes R-SYS and R-SYS Premium front wheel rims. They were sold as original equipment on various bicycle brands and were also sold separately. R-SYS wheel rims are designed for road bikes. “R-SYS” is printed on the front rim of the wheels. The rims are 22mm in diameter, with 16 tubular, unidirectional carbon spokes. 

 The rims were sold at specialty bicycle retailers from May 2007 through December 2008 for between $700 and $750 for the front wheel of the two-wheel set when sold separately from the bicycle.

 The CPSC has instructed consumers to stop using bicycles with the recalled front wheel rims and contact their bicycle retailer for a free replacement front rim.
